Salvia is a low-maintenance perennial with spikes of tubular blossoms that loves the sun, but can do well in part shade (although the number of flowers will likely be reduced).

It attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It is heat- and drought-tolerant. And deer and rabbits don’t like it’s strong smell.

If you trim these plants back a little when the blooms start to fade, you can get them to re-bloom all summer.

With so many features going for them, it’s easy to see why Salvia is a mainstay of the garden border.

Or ‘Black and Blue’ which has deep blue flowers on black stems (and is really easy to grow from seed).

Some varieties like ‘Victoria Blue’ are annuals that bloom all summer long.
