With their deer-resistant leaves and pretty pink or purple flowers, the dwarf varieties of Astilbes (Astilbe chinensis) are perfect ground covers for your shade garden.

Their leaves and delicate blooms are quite similar in appearance to standard Astilbes but on a smaller scale.
